Galway, town and village, are located in western Saratoga County of upstate New York. With a population of around 5,000, Galway is a community in transition. Once composed largely of farms, both large and subsistence, Galway is today a more diverse community integrating farms, residential areas and businesses. As established in the town’s comprehensive plan, Galway is committed to retaining its rural character, rich in farmlands and open spaces and grounded in the tradition of neighbor helping neighbor.
Brief History of Galway
(excerpted from the book Galway 1900-1949, a Photographic History, published by the Galway Preservation Society)
The territory that became Galway was settled by Scottish immigrants from the lowland area of Whithorn Parish, Galloway, Scotland, in the year 1774. They called the new settlement New Galloway in honor of their native land. For reasons unknown, the name was recorded as Galway when the Town was created in 1792. It included the hamlets of Mosherville, East Galway and North Galway, as well as the Village of Galway, which was incorporated in 1838. A perfect square, one-half mile on each side and comprising 160 acres, Galway Village is the second smallest incorporated village in New York State.

About the Galway Get Together
The Galway Get Together Community Resource Center, a project of the Galway Public Library, is a one-stop information hub for the Galway School District area which includes Galway and parts of Broadalbin, Charlton, Hagaman and Providence; a population of over 7,000 residents. Begun as a bi-weekly newsletter developed and produced by volunteers, the new project broadens the scope of the newsletter’s reach by building a dynamic website and Facebook page that is continually updated. The Center offers the public information and access to products and services locally available, thereby stimulating business, volunteerism and support for the gamut of local resources – growers, builders, fixers, care providers and the service organizations vital to our community.
This new, more comprehensive service of the Galway Public Library was made possible through a seed grant from the Southern Adirondack Library System in 2017.
The Galway Get Together Community Resource Center is based on the same mission that established the newsletter in 2010 – to build a stronger and more cohesive community by promoting area resources – businesses, organizations and individuals.
